I knew I had gotten a head start and was taking the stairs two at a time. Things were looking good. I went hard up the corner of the first landing to the second set of stairs in under four seconds for sure. When I whacked the top landing, I knew I had busted the record. I was thinking 7.7-something and looked up at Bones to confirm.
But Bones wasn't even looking at me. He was staring down the stairs with his mouth wide open. It was a replay of the kitchen. With my hand still stretched out on the landing and the rest of me sprawled on the stairs, I rolled my head to look down at the foyer.
Yup. Gina. She was standing at the bottom of the stairs in her spandex running shorts, tank top and once again, smiling at Bones.
"Okay, boys, I'm heading out for a run. I put Hank's clothes in the wash, and I'll be back later to put them in the dryer. Have fun with your video games! And make sure you boys get outside to play in the grass!"
Gina left laughing at her own joke, but Bones was still staring at the closed door.
"You didn't even start the clock, did you?" I said.
"Nope."
