We scrambled to get under our covers in time. I jumped in the bottom bunk and turned off the lights with my remote. I thought Bones would make it to the top bunk in time, but he didn’t.

I heard a loud bang just as Estelle turned on the lights to see Bones on the ladder going sideways and crashing to the floor. Normally she would’ve yelled at us and told us to go to bed, but I guess she felt bad for Bones and offered him a glass of water.

“Oh that would be great, Mrs. King. I was just getting out of bed to get some.”

After Estelle had left, I lay awake in the dark, not knowing what to say, so I just went with the obvious. “So, Bones, how’s your cancer?”

Of course he couldn’t help himself. “Well, Lump, you see it’s mostly…” A fart from the top bunk blasted through the air and shook the entire bunk.

Bones was laughing as he spoke. “Lump, I think the smell got stuck up here!” That made me laugh, but I knew I had to focus on my return volley.

“I think you blasted the cancer right out of your butt on that one, Bones! Oh man, how am I ever going to top…”
