Bones liked to call Stevie “Ch-Ching” because Stevie always carried loose change in his pocket. Stevie was fascinated with American coins. Whenever Bones, the big idiot, saw Stevie in the halls at school, he’d act like he was pulling a giant slot machine and yell, “Ch-Ching!!”
This was the buffoonery that I had to deal with on a daily basis, even though Stevie loved it. Stevie’s real name was Chang Ching, but he went by Stevie because Chinese people liked to use English names, and apparently they picked any name they wanted.
Stevie idolized Steve Jobs, and he thought it was the saddest day of his life when Steve Jobs died. That’s why he chose Stevie.
According to Bones, Stevie came over here with his mom, and his dad was supposed to follow them not long after, but he never showed. Every week during summer school, Mr. Mac would put one really hard problem on the board, and if anybody could solve it, they were excused from the next week’s class.
Of course nobody ever solved the problem because we all sucked at math. Without fail, every week we would all sit there like a bunch of idiots, and then from the back of the room, Stevie would scream, “Mr. Mac!” His loud voice would scare the crap outta everybody in the room.
