Across the rink, our goalie, Billy Murphy, had already got sucked into the water along with one of Mikey’s hockey nets. He was floating on top of his bike, but the water was quickly rising around him. Seeing us sink seemed to shake everyone else on the ice out of their stupor and they bolted for the shore.

They all made it, except for me and Murph, and they just stood and stared at us from the bank.

I was trying to lean forward on my bike without making more ice break when Bones started barreling down the hill on the Basket Barge. He flew past all the kids who were staring and he hit the ice going full speed.

“Bones, stop!” I yelled as loud as I could. “You’ll get sucked in, too!”

But he just ignored me and kept on pedaling until I could see that it wasn’t a hose stuffed in his basket but a bright yellow rope that I recognized from my house. It was one of the Estellicane’s safety ropes that she made workers use when doing projects around our place.
