CHAPTER 27

inside the kratzers’

Bones had Stevie’s phone. It must have fallen out of Stevie’s pocket when the Suits took him away. Or maybe he dropped it on purpose because he didn’t want his kidnappers to get ahold of what was on that phone—the LightYear app and the location of the last engineer.

It was then that I noticed that the phone was still working. Wow, Stevie may have dropped it from over two hundred feet out of a helicopter and it still worked. I knew we had to turn it off so the Suits couldn’t track it.

“Bones, turn that thing off. They have to be tracking that thing somehow.”

Bones quickly powered it off.

The Suits definitely had a trace on Stevie’s phone because they were starting to get closer to where we were hiding, but as soon as Bones powered it off, they went into a frenzy.

So there I was, lying on top of Bones in Annie Kratzer’s garden with the kidnap squad coming down on us—what a crazy end to our summer. I knew we had to move fast because, if we stayed put, the Suits would find us for sure.

I swung my head around and saw that the Kratzers’ front porch was unlit and the front door open. The Suits, meanwhile, had started moving their search in the opposite direction. Turning off the phone was a brilliant move . . . of course, I thought of it.

Now we had time to get out of there.
