CHAPTER 10
summer school
Bones wasn’t even supposed to go to summer school with me. He got a ninety-two on the exam, and that score even included the paper-explosion penalty Impostolu had given him. I got a sixty-one, definitely not enough to bring my D up to a C minus.
Bones was still coming to summer school, though, because Estelle had forgotten he was at our house. If she drove him home, she’d be late for her spa appointment—which simply wasn’t an option for her. So she asked our teacher, Mr. McDonald, if Bones could stay with me.
Mr. Mac was the happiest math teacher I had ever met. I thought nobody could ever be happy about summer school, especially the teacher. He was the anti-Impostolu. I think I learned more in the first two classes of summer school from Mr. Mac than I had learned all year from Impostolu.
Mr. Mac welcomed Bones to the class. “Sure! Hank can sit back there with Mr. Ching and keep him company!” Of course Bones was more than happy to join Stevie in the back because he found him so interesting.
Stevie Ching, the math genius, was only in our class because Mr. Mac was head of the math department and had been tutoring him before our class. Mr. Mac was actually learning things from Stevie!
And it was great for Stevie to stay the extra hour with our class because he’d get a chance to practice his English.
