I studied a big map of the subway stops on the wall and figured out that the next stop was Fiftieth Street. I could relax for two minutes. As I sat down, I heard a CRUNCH. The deli package! Bones would’ve been on the ground laughing if he had seen me pull a slice of ham out of my shorts on the subway.
I couldn’t help but be excited as I opened the package—I was starving. A guy with long hair, wearing flip flops was standing next to me. He was even more excited and edged closer to me, “Looks good, man! I haven’t had anything to eat since Tuesday. Whatta we got? Pastrami? Corn beef?!”
None of the above.
He was pretty upset when I unwrapped the last piece of paper. “One slice of ham?!” I picked up the slice and gave it to him. “I’m not hungry. I just ate.” (It wasn’t a lie. I’d had an ice cream sandwich.) Just as I was about to crumple up the wrapper, I noticed some writing on the back of it. As soon as I saw it, I knew what it was.
