“Lump, did I scare you?” Bones said, lacing his fingers behind his head and grinning.
I could tell he was about to jump up and start doing one of his loud orangutan dances, so I told him to shush because Quiet Cal was still out there, and no doubt the other two Goons would be coming back soon, too.
Sure enough, I heard Gordo out there. “Cal, did you see those two losers go by?”
I jumped out of view and peeked around the edge of the window. Gordo was standing over the crossbar of his bike.
His face was red and he was breathing hard. “We lost the green bean somewhere off Hayden Street. I swear the dude knew exactly where he was going, which is weird because he’s not even from around here, right, Mazz?”
Mazz pulled up next to Gordo. “Yeah, they’re not even from around here, and the kid was sprinting in and out of people’s yards like he knew exactly where he was going. No way we could’ve caught him.”
From behind me Bones laughed. “Not from around here? This is so cool, Lump! We actually are from here . . . but forty years later!”
I waved my hand at him to pipe down and peered back out the window. Now Gordo was standing really close to Cal’s face.
