He had a big smile on his face. “Hello, boys! They’ve already swept up the streets at the intersection, so if you’re thinking about grabbing a donut for lunch, they’re gone.”

Office Reilly winked and Bones laughed; I could only muster up a charity chuckle. I was too worried about the Suits to focus on anything else. I kept looking over my shoulder, making sure they hadn’t spotted us yet.

The Cadillac pulled out onto the street and a loud “Yahoooo!” blasted from the passenger window.

Officer Reilly watched the Caddy pull away. “They took my cruiser away for a month,” he said ruefully, “which means I’ve got the street beat for a while. If I had my car right now, I’d probably arrest those guys.”

“I’m sorry, Officer Reilly,” Bones said, hanging his head. “I think that’s our fault.”

Officer Reilly patted Bones’ shoulder and smiled again. “No, son, you saved my job for what you did. If it hadn’t been for you, I’d be working at the junkyard.”
