CHAPTER 26
STEALTH
Bones texted his mom and got the okay for the sleepover because she was working the late shift again. I couldn't believe how many hours she put in. One week she worked a hundred hours, and I couldn't help thinking that would be working more than you slept.
I remembered seeing a stack of medical bills in their kitchen. She was trying to keep up with payments for Bones' treatment.
Later that night Bones and I were sitting in the kitchen trying to figure out what we'd have for dessert when Estelle came home from a night session at the spa. She was looking all out of sorts and was set on telling us exactly why.
"There must have been a big accident on East Glen this afternoon because these two helicopters nearly flew straight into my windshield. The nerve of them flying that low—they could've put another dent in my car with all that sand and debris flying around. I need a steam bath."
After Estelle went upstairs, I leaned toward Bones. "We gotta go. If we take off now, we'll make it back before Estelle gets done with her steam."
Then the idiot basically yelled back at me, "How long does it take for a steam bath?"
