chapter 20

Mrs. apostolu

When Yogi pulled up to Ben Franklin Junior High, the building looked almost exactly the same as it did in our time, other than the fact that they called it junior high and we called it middle school. Yogi parked so close to the front door, we were practically sitting on top of it.

Then we all hopped out and walked right in to the school. No cameras watching us; no buzzer to press; no intercom asking was why we were there. We went straight to the principal’s office and sat down in a couple of chairs right outside a frosted-glass door.

Almost immediately the door opened and out walked the principal. Yogi pulled her into one of his classic bear hugs and she laughed.

“How are you, Kara?” Yogi said. Yogi knew the principal, of course; he knew everybody.

“I’m well, Yogi,” Kara said, reemerging from his huge arms, smiling. “Would you like to come in?”

She held open her door and we walked in. “These must be the two boys Doctor Lopez called about this morning?” she said, settling into her chair behind her desk. “Yes, this is CJ and Hank,” Yogi said. “I’m hoping they can enroll here until their situation back home gets fixed.” Yogi winked at us.

“Of course.” Kara nodded. “It’s so good of you to take these boys in. I know you don’t have much space in the shack, so if you need help finding another place for them to stay—”

“No, no, Kara,” Yogi said, waving her away politely. “I’m staying in one of the cars out back and the boys are bunking in the shack, so there’s plenty of space! But thanks for the offer.”
