“Joe!” Chief yelled, snapping the Foozle off. “Please focus!” Joe’s distraction was just enough for G to bolt out the open window next to the shack’s door.
“Hey!” Chief tore open the door and ran out after her. Joe hesitated a second, then followed, turning to say as he left, “It was nice to meet you.”
I looked at Yogi. “What should we do?”
Yogi rubbed his chin. “Relax, boys,” he said matter-of-factly. “They won’t get very—”
ERRRRRYYYYYYYTTTTT!!! The sound of screeching tires ripped through the air. It was so loud it sounded like the car was right inside the shack rather than out on the road.
The screeching was immediately followed by what sounded like a girl screaming. My heart thudded in my ears . . . G had just been sprinting across the Yard, headed right for the street.
Bones flung himself out the door. I wasn’t sure if I should follow him or stay with Yogi. Yogi was sitting in his chair, looking like he was about to pass out. I think he was in shock, like he already knew that the worst had happened.
I was about to tap his arm gently when he snapped out of it, grabbed the phone, and frantically dialed.
