The two security guys in the room with me had been watching Bones’ catastrophe unfold and they were nearly in tears from laughing—that is, until the manager busted into the room. Then they got all serious, looked over at me, and said, “You want us to call juvie?”

The manager paused a second, and then she started laughing. She took one look over at me and said, “Oh, no, no. You can let him go.” And she just walked out, still laughing.

When I finally got out of the store, Bones was waiting out front for me. I couldn’t believe I had somehow gotten out of that mess. “Bones! That lady, the manager, just walked in and let me go. What did you say to her before you destroyed her store?!”

Bones laughed. “I told her the last time you won a race you were seven years old and were wearing a potato sack at the Ramsey Fair. I said there was no way you were going to try stealing a t-shirt by outrunning anybody!”

Unfortunately, when we got back to the phone store, the line was even longer than before. Bones didn’t even try to get his place back. He just started walking straight to the back, and I didn’t like that at all.
