Chapter 6

last trip ever

Back in the present time in New York City, the five Suits who had converged on the subway platform to capture Lumpy and Bones stood outside the train, squint- ing their eyes and shaking their heads. The brightness and heat of the app’s flash had been unbelievable. People were stepping off the train, dazed and confused.

A young boy turned to a man with white hair and a cane and said, “Woah, Gramps! That was awesome. I couldn’t see for like twenty seconds!” He took his grandfather’s hand and guided him off the train.

“I can’t see, Nathan,” the grandfather said gruffly. “It was like some sort of light explosion.”

The boy helped his grandfather over the gap between the train and the platform and added, “I think that one kid’s phone exploded right in his hands and now they’re gone. They just disappeared!”

Two of the Suits had made it down onto the subway platform and were looking all around, behind pillars and underneath benches, until they were joined by three other Suits. They seemed to be as bewildered as everyone else by the disappearance of Lumpy and Bones.

When all the passengers had finally cleared from the train, a warning sound signaled that the doors were closing.
