chapter 30
made a wrong turn
Joe slid back into the passenger seat of the orange Caddy. Chief looked at him expectantly, waiting to hear what the two gangsters in the black car had told him. Joe opened his mouth and said, “I’m really hungry.”
“Joe,” Chief said, exasperated, “you’re supposed to tell me what those guys back there want.” Behind them, the black car revved its engine.
“Oh yeah, Chief,” Joe said, as if the conversation had happened ages ago rather than a minute. “We’re supposed to follow them. They’re gonna help us find the boys.”
“What?” Chief shouted. “That’s ludicrous, Joe. Please tell me that you didn’t tell them we’re searching for the Tomato and the Cornstalk.”
“Nope, I didn’t.”
Chief sank back into his seat, relieved. “Thank goodness.” He paused. “You’re not just saying that, are you?”
“I am.”
“Joe!” Chief banged the horn in frustration and it let out a giant MOOOOOO!! Joe burst into hysterics.
“That’s not funny,” Chief scolded.
