CHAPTER 20
WITH EYE
I got a text from Bones the next morning.
Bones: Low air, no tank.
That meant his phone was about to die and he hadn't brought along a charger. I got pretty worried when I didn't hear back from him for a few days, so I asked Estelle to call Bones' mom to see what was up. Turned out he had to stay in the hospital because his doctors wanted to start radiation.
The only thing I knew about radiation was that you got zapped with some sort of laser and it was supposed to make the cancer go away. I could only imagine Bones getting up onto the zapping table and the doctors saying, "We can't zap this kid—we might just zap him in half!"
No wonder Bones' texts about Stevie's phone made no sense. They must've zapped some of his brain cells by accident.
I asked Estelle if we could find out what hospital he was at so we could visit. That didn't go over very well. She said, "Hospitals are very private about these things. Besides, the traffic into the city would be a complete disaster."
So I had to wait.
