CHAPTER 38

FOUND THE INSTRUCTIONS

The Time Warner building was bigger than the whole town of Ridgewood. There had to have been at least fifty checkout lines at the Whole Foods which took up the entire basement of the building. Anybody who didn't have a GPS could easily get lost in there.

I walked quickly around the produce section and past the bakery to the deli. When I got to the deli counter, a bunch of people were just standing around, and I didn't know why. Then     I remembered going to the market once with Estelle (I think she's been grocery shopping a grand total of two times) and in order to get service, we had to take a number.

I found the ticket machine and pulled out a number. Eighty-eight. I had a little time, so I took out my phone to try Bones again. No response.

I looked up at the small screen above the deli just as the number jumped to eighty-eight. Everything moved fast in the city. A tall man behind the counter who looked a lot like President Obama approached me and asked for my order.

My response was more of a question than an order. "Can I get one slice of honey baked ham?" an order. β€œCan I get one slice of honey baked ham?”
