When I got back downstairs to the kitchen, Bones was standing at the big island in the middle of the room like he was frozen in time. He had his mouth wide open and looked dazed.

He was still dripping all over the floor from his missile shot into the fountain. I knew what was going on before I even saw her.

Gina.

My sister, Gina, was seventeen. She was only six when our mother died in a car accident. No one was ready for it, and I guess that was why my dad didn’t talk about her much.

Gina did talk about our mom a lot, though. I guess that made sense, seeing as she was old enough to remember her. And it was probably why Gina called Estelle our dad’s midlife crisis.

Bones wasn’t the only one who froze like a statue when he saw Gina. Besides, I could tell she was pretty just by looking at the old pictures of my mom. Gina looked just like her. My mom had been tall and thin with strawberry- blond hair, and she always looked happy in all of her pictures.

Gina was also one of the best soccer players at Ridgewood High School. And to top it all off, she was really smart. Sometimes she treated me like a kid brother, and other times she treated me like I was her kid, which was probably why she and Estelle didn’t get along at all.
