After Estelle closed the door behind her, Bones and I jumped out of the pool, and I grabbed Stevie's phone to inspect it. "I don't know. Maybe if we put it in a bag of rice . . ." I knew it was a long shot because the phone had gotten totally submerged in the water.
We went into the cabana and got a couple of robes so Estelle wouldn't see our "improper attire." We snuck up the back stairway, hoping she would forget to make us the cocoa. She usually did.
When we got into my room, we changed and connected Stevie's phone to the USB cord on my iMac desktop. Nothing happened. Just as I was about to yell at Bones for being a dope and jumping in the pool with it, the screen lit up with a giant flash that nearly threw Bones and me out of our seats. Then the screen went blank again.
"What was that?!" Bones jumped out of his chair. "I went blind for a few seconds!"
I was about to pull the cord out of the phone when words started to scroll across the black screen in plain white text. The message stopped, perfectly centered.
I quickly read it out loud. "Who was the most important person ever??? You only get ONE attempt to answer correctly!"
