She had her hair up and looked a little bit different than when I saw her earlier this summer at a lacrosse game. I forgot who she was there to watch, but it sure wasn't me. I heard she had broken up with her Mr. Popular boyfriend, who was off to high school, so there were a million guys swarming around her hoping to be next in line.

She surprised me after the game because she came up to me and said, "You played a great game, CJ."

I did have a great game, with four goals, but my mouth wouldn't open to respond. I couldn't believe she remembered my name—never mind talked to me. Bones was at the game, too and was next to me when it all went down.

He whispered loud enough for Annie to hear, "Lump, you've had a crush on this girl since fifth grade—say something!"

So I did. I said, "I got some goals."

Right after I said it, I realized how stupid I sounded. But there was Bones right behind me, who piped up and said, "Oh yeah you did, Lump. Four goals, did you see the fourth one, Annie? Over the shoulder?!" Annie smiled and nodded and then walked away.

I turned to Bones and said, "Could I have sounded any stupider?"

Bones said it like it was. "Nope!"
