Chapter 2
completely different
The flash felt like it was scorching my body, and the scene around us was completely silent and still: the subway door, the people about to get on and off the train, even the Suits, ready to jump on and grab us, were all completely frozen. Then I started floating, like the first time I had used the app, but this time, it felt very different.
I could see Bones beneath me as his body started to slowly fade into what looked like a bunch of tiny, fizzy bubbles. It was like he was bubbling into disappearance.
“Bones!” I said, trying to scream, but nothing came out. I tried screaming over and over again—but nothing. Silence.
Then everything faded to black.
I couldn’t see anything and all I heard was the fizzing of the bubbles. In the darkness, it felt like the bubbles had formed a cocoon around my body as I spun faster and faster. I couldn’t stop, I couldn’t see where I was going, and where was Bones? I was terrified.
It felt like I was already spinning at light speed, but somehow I was still accelerating. Thin streams of color appeared around my body, getting thicker and thicker, while the pressure on my face and body grew to such intensity that I felt like I was going to be squashed flat.
