chapter 28

follow us

The black vehicle with dark tinted windows sat idling behind the orange Cadillac. Nobody was getting out, but they weren’t getting their car out of the way, either.

Joe twisted in his seat to look out the back window. “Do you think they’re lost, Chief? Maybe they’re just trying to get around us.”

Chief shook his head. “No, Joe. They are right where they want to be, I’m sure of it.”

Inside the black car, a very large man who looked stuffed inside his pinstripe suit sat in the driver’s seat. Next to him was a small, older guy, probably in his mid sixties, who was thin and had a full head of silver hair.

The older guy had his arms crossed and was staring stonily out the windshield. “Sal, it’s two hours past my bedtime and I’m tired.”

Sal chuckled. “Antone, why do you stay in the business if you don’t like the work? This is what we do, we work at night. We work when the Boss wants us to work.”

“You call this work, Sal?” Antone jabbed his finger at the windshield. “I don’t think so. We’re following a giant pumpkin around town and they know we’re here. Our orders were to follow and not be seen. Now what?”
