CHAPTER 29
豬輪傘出豬
When we got back to the bottom of my drive- way, I knew Estelle wasn’t home because the front gates were still open. Just as I started to punch in the code to her garage door, it started to go up. Estelle was back. She’d know we were out if we didn’t get inside before she drove up.
We ducked under the door with our bikes and ditched them. I told Bones to follow my lead. I tore off my shirt, kicked off my shoes, bolted out the side door to the pool, and dove in. I turned to see that Bones had followed me in, doing one of his patented jackknives almost straight on top of me. That was when it hit me.
“Bones! The phone! Did you take it out before you jumped in!?”
He swam over, pulled it out of his pocket, and held it up. “Lump, I might have forgotten to do that.”
Bones was swimming to the side of the pool when Estelle walked out. She looked at us and said, “Well, it’s about time you boys used the pool! Do you want to come in for some hot cocoa?”
Hot cocoa?? It was late August and about eighty degrees at night, but I didn’t want to make her suspicious if we refused. “Okay! We’ll be out in a few minutes.” We weren’t wearing official bathing suits so I had to make sure she didn’t see the violation.
