CHAPTER 31
The Streak Ends
The moving trucks came early the next morning, and for some reason I got up early, too. I had a pretty big hole in my stomach as I walked down the hall to Gina’s room. When I got there, the hole only got bigger because all her boxes were gone, and her room was so bare. Her bed was still there and a few things left on her desk but not much else.
I went downstairs and heard the rumble of a moving truck and the beeping noise of it backing out of the driveway. I looked out the garage door and saw a black town car waiting for Gina and my dad, who had gotten in very late last night.
They were standing in the kitchen, and it was obvious they were just waiting for me to come down so they could leave for their drive up to Connecticut. My Dad wasn’t into big emotional scenes, so he rushed it.
“Okay, pal, we’re heading out. You hold down the fort, and I’ll be back in a few days—well, actually the end of the week. I’ve got to go back to Berlin, and I’m leaving from Boston.”
