“OFFICER REILLY!” Bones and I shouted in unison. At the last second, we swerved hard right, then left, tilting the car onto two wheels. Bones and I screamed. The car slammed back down onto all fours and we kept going at breakneck speed.
“Something on your mind, kid?” Office Reilly said, glancing at Bones. Seriously? He was acting like we were taking a little stroll out in the country. This was the craziest ride I’d ever be on in my life.
Bones pointed at Officer Reilly’s lap and yelled, “Aren’t you going to put on your seat belt?”
Officer Reilly laughed. “Seat belt?” He spun the steering wheel hard to the right, catching me off guard. I slid across the seat and slammed into the door behind Bones as we came to a screeching halt in front of the Ridgewood Trust Bank.
Officer Reilly calmly put the car in park, turned off the siren, then looked at Bones and said, “Nobody wears a seat belt, kid.”
He jumped out of the car and pulled his gun out of its holster, then he looked at us and said, “You boys stay right there!”
