“Let’s focus,” Yogi said. “G is going with me and Lopey to his house to try to save her. Boys, you’re going home.”

G whimpered. She didn’t like that idea. Yogi looked at Joe and Chief and said sternly, “And they’re going home alone, without you two.”

“But even if the boys went alone,” Doc Lopez said, “I’m guessing that Bones would get his cancer back.” He looked at Bones sadly. “Lo siento, amigo.” (I’m sorry, friend.)

Nobody said a word. Basically, Doc Lopez was saying that if Bones went back to his life in the present, he’d have ten months to live, maybe less . . . just like before. We’d be back at square one.

Bones patted my knee from where he was crouched next to G. He was consoling me for his having cancer, as usual. “Lump, your face is all crumpled, just like when we were on the subway in the City about to zap into the future. But don’t worry, we’re on a mission to find a cure. We didn’t find it here, so what. We’re not gonna give up now, Lump.” He looked over at Yogi. “But we can at least save G, can’t we?”
