The sheriff turned his mean gaze on Officer Reilly. “Officer Reilly! Is it proper procedure to leave the trunk of one’s cruiser unlocked?”
Officer Reilly shook his head, his eyes locked on the ground. “No, sir. That’s my fault, sir.”
“Make sure you bring the boys down before they leave, Yogi,” the sheriff said sternly. Then he spun on his heel and strode back to his cruiser and everyone followed.
Yogi smiled and waved until the last cruiser had pulled out of the lot, then his smile instantly vanished and he pulled Stevie’s phone out of his overalls and held it up in front of our faces. The LightYear app was open, flashing, scrambling to find a signal. He slowly handed the phone to me.
“OK, boys, we need to talk.”
