chapter 33
suddenly out
Bones and I stood in the lot outside the shack and watched the Goon Squad race furiously down the street and out of sight. I was in full panic mode—but not Bones. He had his hands stuck in his pockets and was watch- ing them ride away with a far-off look in his eye.
“I could beat any one of those kids in a race on my bike,” he said.
The Goon Squad had Stevie’s phone and they had only way of getting back home, and here Bones was thinking about beating them in a race.
No doubt about it—we had some seriously big problems on our hands. At the top of the problem list was the fact that the Suits had somehow figured out how to follow us through time. They must have fixed one of the other prototypes; there was no other explanation.
Stevie had said there were nine others, but he’d said he was certain that if even they did get one to transport them, it would only work once, and they couldn’t even transport without his dad and the engineering team helping them. Stevie had tried to explain why, but not even Bones really understood what he was saying. Either way, it didn’t matter.
