So I figured I’d just hop on my bike and ride over without really saying anything to anybody. Well, that plan went bad quick. As soon as I started riding out of the driveway, Estelle pulled up in the Hog.
“Where are you going? Did you leave me a note?” Now I was really dead. I had forgotten to leave a note. “I’m going to Hank’s because Stevie’s over there and—”
“Okay, just be careful biking around in that neigh- borhood. It’s very dangerous.”
That was odd. Usually Estelle would never let me go to Bones’ without a police escort. But I wasn’t going to argue with her, so I took the free pass and bolted down the street.
Stevie lived at Ridgewood Estates with his mom. That got me to thinking that maybe they didn’t let dads live there. Stevie’s apartment was directly above Bones’, and Bones told me that lots of times, he’d hear strange noises late at night coming from his apartment.
When I got to Ridgewood Estates, I hit the buzzer for Bones’ apartment, and of course the idiot wouldn’t just let me in. He had to let Stevie answer.
“Hello. Who is calling me?” Stevie was giggling because he thought he was disguising his voice. To make it all worse, he kept his finger on the intercom, so I could still hear him laughing and talking to Bones. “Ah Hank, do you think he know it me on phone com?”
Bones loved it ad to fire me up even more, he let Stevie think he was the King of Comedy, “No, Stevie, he has no idea it’s you! Ask him who it is again!”
Then there was silence because Stevie had obviously taken his finger off the button, which gave me the opportunity to chime in.
