“You boys should be warned that you’re not going back to the exact time and place you transported from, so anything is possible. According to Dr. Yang, the transports will land at the same date and time, but quite possibly very different places.”
“I’d love to meet this Dr. Yang,” Doc Lopez said. “He sounds like a brilliant doctor.”
“Well, he is a she,” Chief corrected him. “And yes, she is.”
“Wait,” Yogi said. “Don’t transport yet.” He motioned to the two Suits, Chief and Joe, to step behind us. “I trust you both now. You were going to let the boys go without you. You’ve shown me that you truly have had a change of heart.”
The two Suits moved in behind me and Bones. I raised up Stevie’s phone and looked at G one last time. She winked, then gave a big sigh and closed her eyes.
“G, NO!” Bones yelled. “Yogi, it’s not your fault!”
“Press the button, Lump,” Yogi said, a deep sadness in his voice. “We’ll be OK.”
I nodded, trying to keep myself together even though all I wanted to do was fall apart. I guess I hadn’t realized how attached I had gotten to G. I readied myself to press the flash, but out of the corner of my eye, I saw the bushes rustle where Bones and I had hid from the Goon Squad.
I gave them a good, long look but saw nothing, so I counted to three and pushed the button to transport. , then shouts came from the direction of the bushes:
Then came the FLASH and the heat . . . and we were gone.
