Chapter 19

Let’s eat

Behind the giant glass window in the transport room, the Boss and Dr. Yang had now been joined by several other scientists, who stood watching the monitors in front of them that televised the Suits on the transport staging area. The Boss stood with his arms crossed, his shoulders rigid, and his jaw clenched. For the first time, he looked truly tense.

The Boss watched on the screen as Joe darted from his designated spot to Chief’s X and threw his arm around him, grinning.

“What is he doing?” the Boss shouted, rounding on Dr. Yang. “Where is he going? Didn’t you tell him NOT to move?”

“Of course I did, sir,” Dr. Yang stammered, a splotchy red rising on her neck and spreading across her face. “I told him not to . . . I had no idea he would . . . I mean, he said he wouldn’t . . .”

The brightness of the FLASH from the prototype lit up the screen and the Boss threw his arms up in the air and stormed out the door into the transport room. Dr. Yang followed, still stammering, clutching her throat.

“I am so sorry, Boss. Truly I had no idea he would—” The Boss stopped abruptly inside the transport room, and Dr. Yang nearly crashed into him.
